The Role of Influenceable Media in AI Marketing

Affiliate marketing has traditionally been treated as a bottom-of-funnel channel, measured by the coupon code, cashback click, or referral immediately before purchase. But publishers have long influenced what happens before that final action. Review sites, comparison pages, and listicles help people understand their options and decide which brands to consider. AI is making that influence harder to ignore. People are increasingly asking AI tools questions they once researched themselves, and the answers may draw on third-party publisher content. AI can introduce a brand before a customer ever even visits Google, then convert later through direct, organic, paid search, or another channel.

AI can introduce a brand before a customer ever even visits any website, then convert later through direct, organic, paid search, or another channel. This is the effect of what we call influenceable media.

Influenceable media refers to publishers you can partner with to create content about your brand. In other words, these are publishers where a brand can “pay to play” or influence the content published on their sites. These trustworthy publishers are becoming particularly important in the AI era, as LLMs use them as citations when generating answers. LLMs want balanced content, so they’ll never rely on your site for 100% of their citations. The best way to help ensure those answers portray your brand accurately is to use influenceable media to shape the message.

AI recommendations are changing traffic patterns

Recent data from Similarweb helps put numbers behind this shift. In a study across finance, travel, and beauty, users were 2.5 times more likely to visit the brand recommended by AI within seven days. More than half of those visits came through branded search, not an AI referral.

AI can influence the path to purchase before someone visits a brand’s website. A person may ask a broad question, receive recommendations, and form an opinion before clicking anywhere. They may visit a site later, search for the brand by name, or convert through another channel.

The original source of that decision may not be visible in the final conversion path.

Affiliate content can influence the research process

AI tools do not rely only on a brand’s own website. Depending on the platform and the question, their answers may draw from product reviews, comparison pages, editorial articles, industry publications, forums, and other third-party content.

Those sources make it easier to compare brands. A review site can explain product differences, while a listicle can rank the best options for a specific use case. These pages can help customers decide which brands are worth considering, even if the user never clicks through to the publisher’s website.

The economics of affiliate need to change

Skilled affiliate managers have been moving away from solely bottom funnel traffic for years. Reviews, comparison, listicles and content are the bulk of many strong affiliate programs. That is because all marketers understand their value at the time of bringing sales. And now with AI citations, this mid and upper funnel affiliates are becoming even more important.

That is where influenceable media becomes useful. These are publishers a brand can work with to shape how its products are presented, from large review sites to niche blogs and comparison pages. The goal is not to buy every possible mention. It is to build a credible mix of sources that helps the brand appear in the conversations that matter, whether the objective is discovery, education, or conversion.

The question is not, “How much traffic will this publisher send us?” It is, “How might this publisher influence how customers discover and evaluate our brand?” and “How do I ensure I get in front of the right customer when they are starting their discovery journey?”

Affiliate relationships are becoming more important

Affiliate now overlaps with content, public relations, SEO, and influencer marketing. A publisher may help with discovery and education as well as conversion, so the relationship cannot always be evaluated by the final click alone.

Brands will need to build stronger publisher relationships and measure the influence that happens before the conversion.

AI makes this third-party influenceable media more important. AI systems need reliable sources to compare products, answer questions, and make recommendations.

Affiliate is no longer just a way to capture demand that already exists. It can also influence how customers discover and compare brands before they are ready to buy.

That means investing in the right publisher relationships and measuring the entire sphere of influence your affiliate marketing efforts truly have.
